Boarding House
16 children, who were selected by EBCC Germany in conjunction with the local authorities, took up their places in 2007. By then the position of a home mother had also been defined as the key person to be on duty 24 hrs a day! Later a home father was employed as well (see job descriptions).
Supervision on a day-to-day basis is carried out by "Center of Concern", formerly "Forum for Human Rights and Development (FHRD)" and through regular site visits from EBCC members.
The Orphanage was temporarily set up in a private compound, rented from July 2007 onwards to EBCC Germany. In July 2008 we moved to a more comfortable and larger house nearby. EBCC decided not to extend the lease agreement and financed the move to a more comfortable house.
For the kids we continue to have a quiet and peaceful environment.
Land to construct our own boarding house had been applied for at the Awassa Town Council in 2008. By now the plan has been skipped by EBCC Management. We feel comfortable with renting houses, as they are available at reasonable prices. Our wish is to find a landlord who could leave us in the house for a longer period. We hope the current one is such a dream of a landlord!
Monthly expenditures of the boarding house (approx.), covered by EBCC:
214 € rental of the house
289 € food for 16 children and staff
345 € wages for staff (1 housemother, 1 auntie, 1 project controller, tutoring staff)
107 € costs around schooling, private school fees, school uniforms ...
244 € costs for water, electricity, gas, medical fees, clothing, admin
--------
1,199 € all in all ... (update 11/2011)
1.220 € are covered at the present moment (04.11.2011) through regular donations
received by EBCC, the remaining amount comes through fundraising events and other
donors. For 2 Boarding Houses with around 50 children ... see Street Children we need approx. 1,500 € per month if external partners remain on our side and pay another 1,500 €. The dream came true: One partner secured 50% of the 2 houses for 2 years until 31st of December 2013!
